This is a widespread problem in our society since sweeping changes were made decades ago. MOST people who need mental health services are resistant–and unless deemed to have no capacity are allowed to have a choice in their treatment–which is part of the problem. Usually only people who are actually harmful to themselves receive inpatient psychiatric services so the point about mass murders not having been in-patients is a moot point. I, personally, have never heard this “myth.” Having lived in Tucson, five minutes from where the Giffords shooting took place, and knowing one of the deceased, I can PERSONALLY tell you, that boy needed mental health intervention. He fell through some terrible cracks and was failed by his parents and the school system. While I respect Professor Fox for his credentials, I would suggest at least in the Tucson, Aurora, and Columbine cases, it is very clear tragedies may have been avoided if these killers had received more help. Unfortunately, this can never be proven.
